Orienteering
events always need a huge input from volunteers, but today's event required a
herculean effort. Several problems arose on the day: areas of the lawns fenced
off by the Park staff without letting us know, despite
organiser Kim talking to the warden immediately before the event. Then there
was the locked gate, and an hour spent searching for the warden, who then
promised to open the gate, but didn't. This led to the delays before the start
- sorry if you were held up.
The
Park was very wet in places, unpleasantly so in places, and was borderline for
a go-ahead. But, the decision was made to do the best
we could.
So it was heart-warming to hear
that so many had enjoyed the extra challenges of today's event - especially
many children and those recruited from Chris's maprun events.
I
was very wet and cold at 3pm after my morning's efforts, so it was
wonderful to have so much help with control collecting - I was very
grateful!
Well
done to the helpers - you were magnificent.
And
well done to all of you who braved a course - I hope that you enjoyed it!

comments
David has already
outlined the difficulties we faced today. The snow and rain on Thursday and
Friday nearly led to the event being cancelled for a second time. I hope the
last minute adjustments we had to make didn’t spoil anybody’s runs(or swims) too much. The appreciative comments
heard post runs made all the efforts worth-while and show that
orienteers have tremendous positive attitudes.
Thank you to all!
Kim Buxton
